Neville & Pamela Haynes reside in East London and describe themselves as first generation Black Britons with a rich Caribbean heritage. Neville's parents hail from Barbados and Jamaica and Pam's parents are Barbadians. They are a proud blended family of five children, namely, Jamal and Monique (Nev), Fabian and Montell (Pam) and their son, Patrece. They also have eight grandchildren based in Wellingborough, Northampton and Manchester.

Nev is an engineer by profession and Pam is a retired Senior Probation Officer. Nev volunteers, working tirelessly in grassroots football for the last 25 years. He is an assistant chairman of the Eastern Junior Alliance Youth Football League, FA qualified coach and football scout. Nev said, “We are honoured to take part in this project for Black History Month (BHM), honouring ordinary people like ourselves doing extraordinary work in the community.” In retirement, Pam wrote two novels about domestic abuse from an African Caribbean perspective.

Her award-winning books have helped raise awareness of domestic abuse and she is a much sought after guest speaker and lecturer at the University of East London (UEL). Pam is a scholar at UEL having been recently awarded a research fellowship. Pam said “Collaborating on this project has been an exciting experience for both of us.

However, I strongly believe that BHM should not just be celebrated in October because Black history is integral to the history of the world and should be recognised year-round. Limiting it to one-month risks reducing the significance of Black contributions and experiences to a brief observance, rather than acknowledging the continuous impact that Black individuals and communities have had on culture, society, politics, science, and more.

Celebrating it year-round fosters a deeper understanding of diversity, combats ongoing systemic inequalities, and helps ensure that Black history is embedded into broader historical narratives.”
